About the project

Smart cities need digital service infrastructure to improve safety, energy efficiency, air quality, effectivity of transportation and quality of living. However, the capacity of mobile networks will be far too insufficient due to the increased number of users and new digital services built and planned. The problem of insufficient network capacity can only be solved by using small cell 5G radio frequency technology & higher frequencies; this requires dense networks of antennas setting new requirements for the network infrastructure.

Impact of the project:

The ecosystem creates novel open access digital services, business models and ecosystem, developing & piloting key technical solutions and concept for smart light pole based 5G infrastructure, and business & service innovations. Results: pilot services on navigation, information sharing & advertisement, weather monitoring and smart lighting.

Spinverse’s role

Spinverse facilitated the building of the multidisciplinary project and prepared the joint research plan. Spinverse took care of project management and leadership, supporting the project coordinator (Nokia Bell Labs).

Spinverse also helped in technical steering, internal and external communications, events as well as boosting cooperation and assisting in reporting.

By delegating most of the ecosystem coordination, project practices as well as public communication activities to Spinverse, we and partners have been able to concentrate on the actual innovation together. This way, everybody has got out the key results from the cooperation, although the issues have been very complex and unforeseen. We are not at the end of our journey yet but will continue working with the products and move on to the next unforeseen possibilities with the help of upcoming 6G technology.
