Key deadlines and updates in Klimatklivet
Klimatklivet
Klimatklivet (‘Climate leap’) is a Swedish government investment support programme financing local and regional measures that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Managed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket) and the County Administrative Boards, Klimatklivet supports concrete investments that deliver measurable and immediate climate impact. The programme plays a key role in Sweden’s climate policy by accelerating the transition to fossil-free transport, renewable energy solutions and low-carbon infrastructure.
The programme provides grants for investments that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, replace fossil fuels with renewable alternatives, support electrification and charging infrastructure, improve energy efficiency and enable sustainable transport solutions. It focuses on practical, implementable measures rather than research and innovation activities. The selection process is rather competitive with funding levels based on climate impact and cost efficiency. Successful proposals have to comply with state aid regulations.
Who is eligible?
Both private and public actors can apply for Klimatklivet funding, provided that the investment leads to measurable emission reductions within Sweden. Projects must be additional to legal requirements and not already implemented.
Eligible entities:
- Companies
- Municipalities and regions
- Housing companies and property owners
- Associations and organisations.
What does Klimatklivet support?
Projects eligible for funding must demonstrate clear and quantifiable emission reductions. Klimatklivet supports investments such as:
- Charging infrastructure for electric vehicles
- Investments in production, distribution and utilisation of renewable hydrogen.
- Energy transition support for agriculture
- Fuel switching from fossil to renewable sources
- Utilisation of waste heat and excess heat
- Investments in biochar utilisation
- Biogas production and distribution
- Sustainable bio fuel and electro fuel
- Investments in circular flows
Funding type
Grant: Support to companies is governed by the EU’s state aid rules, and the level of support is influenced by various factors. The aid intensity can be up to 70 percent of the investment cost and typically ranges between 20 and 65 percent.
What evaluators really look for
This is where many Klimatklivet funding proposals fail. Evaluators assess funding proposals based on the following criteria:
Emission reduction effect: Quantified greenhouse gas reductions per invested krona.
Cost efficiency: Cost per tonne of CO₂ reduced.
Feasibility: Realistic implementation plan and timeline.
Additionality: Proposals must clearly demonstrate that the Klimatklivet grant is necessary for the project to occur. This could be justified through the investment plan showing the pay back time is too long for the company to make the investment, and that with Klimatklivet’s support, the applicant will be able to invest in the project.
Strong project ideas lose points when:
- Emission reductions have been overestimated
- Technical documentation is incomplete
- Cost-efficiency calculation is weak
- Additionality justification of other information about the project is insufficient.
How the proposal process works
- Decide the scope of the project
- Calculate the CO2 reduction
- Calculate the investment
- Prepare the information needed to fill the application in the portal
- Collect all necessary documents requested
- Log into the application portal and fill the requested information and attach the documentation
Preparation time:
Early preparation and credible emission modelling significantly improve the competitiveness of your funding proposal. We strongly recommend getting started at least 2 months before deadline, especially for larger projects.
