Before joining Spinverse as a Consultant in the Bioeconomy team, Riina gained strong expertise on lignocellulosic biomass and natural polymers by working as a research scientist at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, and as a product developer at Stora Enso altogether for almost seven years.
Having gained strong proficiency on renewable materials, Riina was responsible of developing novel sustainable solvents for biomass processing at VTT. At Stora Enso, she explored new industrially feasible methods to extract valuable products from lignocellulosic biomass and waste streams. In addition, she has taught statistics and chemistry in university preparation courses.
Riina holds a degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Natural Sciences from University of Helsinki. Her PhD research aimed to develop greener solvents for carbohydrates with focus on cellulose and to understand their complex interactions by using advanced analytical methods. She has published her research in high-quality peer-reviewed journals. She has also completed a Master of Science in Organic Chemistry from University of Jyväskylä. Riina has built her international career by doing her ERASMUS exchange and internship in Switzerland, master’s thesis in Germany, and part of her PhD research in the UK.
In her spare time, Riina enjoys dancing, snowboarding and wakeboarding as well as other sports.
